Cranberry Relished
Many online old-timers favor one Thanksgiving recipe site in particular:
the one for cranberry relish at "Hi! Monkey" (www.himonkey.net).
The recipe itself is an odd - some say addictive - amalgam of sweet
(cranberries, sugar and onion) and sour (horseradish and sour cream)
that is attributed to Susan Stamberg, a National Public Radio correspondent.
But the site is as well loved for its charming host, a terry cloth primate
known only as Monkey, as for its cuisine.
Monkey walks you through the recipe preparation and also offers a photo
montage of "the relish in action." There is even a page of
poetic tributes to the creamy concoction. Monkey's alter ego, Marzi
Pecen of Dallas, said that the site attracts thousands of visitors daily
during the holiday season.
"It's somewhere between an online tradition and a cult,"
Ms. Pecen said by e-mail, adding, "I do get a fair number of messages
from cranberry-deprived countries wondering just what I am talking about."

Everyone loves a monkey, so what could be better than a monkey bearing
scrumptious, delectable goodies, or at least recipes for said snacks?
This cuddly primate, appropriately named “Monkey”, is a
dab hand in the kitchen and you’re sure to leave his site with
a rumbling tum. Some of the snacks have an American err, flavour (jello
anyone?). But each recipe has step-by-step instructions and pictures
of Mr Monkey monkeying around the kitchen. “Crunchy Rice Krispie
treats” won’t have Delia crying into her mixing bowl,
but they'll tickle your tastebuds.

Web search: Monkeying around
Before last week's news broke about the newly discovered kipunji monkey,
there already was a website set up to raise funds to save the rare primate.
Then I got an e-mail from a friend that linked to a chimp speaking with
her voice. And, in case you forgot to mark your calendar, today is International
Sea-Monkey Day. There's lots of monkey business on the Web these days.
www.himonkey.net
The stuffed terrycloth star of Hi! Monkey takes its visitors on adventures
to places such as the Art Institute of Chicago for a game of Find the
Picasso and to a Mexican-food store to buy ingredients to make queso
dip (recipe included) for Cinco de Mayo. There are some charming moments,
such as when Monkey wonders whether Picasso's Blue Period was influenced "by
a bout of ennui or just a great sale on blue paint at the art supply
shop." But a little Monkey goes a long way.

Corrected by a monkey: the meaning of "rinpoche."
An NPR staffer wrote promotional copy on npr.org for one of the "Hacking
the Himalayas" segments that read,
Rinpoche is an honorary title that translates as "senior lama."
The most famous monkey on the internet wrote in to correct this. Monkey
says,
xeni-la, dear,
in your report today on npr you say Rinpoche is an honorary title
that translates as "senior lama." well... it's not exactly. it
means "precious one" (actually precious-one-great) and is
given to a tulku (a reincarnation of a lama), the title can be given
to an accomplished teacher or monk that an oracle foresees their reincarnation,
but that is rare. while many senior lamas are rinpoches, not all rinpoche's
are senior or scholarly. stephen segal, for instance, is referred to
as rinpoche since penor rinpoche revealed that he is a tulku. I've
even dangled from the mouth of toddler tulku and heard the demand "rinpoche,
take the monkey out of your mouth and say thank you." what
a strange world we live in!
Monkey is small, terry cloth, and in addition to being something of
an expert on Tibetan Buddhism -- has a nice personality: Link.
And I'm told by a knowledgeable but anonymous source that on a saucier
side... colloquially, "rinpoche" is also a euphemism for
male genitalia.

Meet the monkey. An Austin native, the monkey is diminutive (just under
six inches tall), affable (he has loads of friends), and itinerant (he's
fond of the open road). Our cheerful simian's hobbies include bookmaking,
cooking, and Tibetan Buddhism. He's also not really a monkey. He's a
stuffed animal -- the kind you might find buried in the back of a six-year-old's
closet. But thanks to a little imagination and some creative digital
camerawork, this charming little critter is giving Paddington the Bear
a run for his money.

Bugs Bunny is a tour de force of sarcasm, wit and exceptionally well-presented
adult humor. Thankfully, cartoons placate kids, too, and provide one
of those rare moments where a father can sit down with his son and not
use words such as repayment, disappointed or legal action. HiMonkey
isn't quite in the wascally wabbit's league but it shows promise. It's
a deadpan presentation of the adventures of a small, stuffed toy. Quite
amusing.

Runny nose? Sore throat? Tickly cough? You are clearly coming down
with something. To help avoid spreading the mystery bugs that seem to
be romping around the office at this time of year, do yourself and everyone
else a favour, and stay at home. Even if they are being sympathetic,
you can be sure that the only thing people are thinking when they look
at you is 'keep away from me, I don't want what you've got.' Staying
at home will enable you to surf the net and look at some sites that
are (in the words of the Fast Show) a little bit 'wooo' and a little
bit 'waaaa', and might just make you feel a little bit better.
Let one of your resolutions be to check out Hi Monkey! for a gentle
journey through the life and exploits of this strange creature. Monkey,
who is a small terry-towelling primate from across the Atlantic, bears
a striking resemblance to a certain monkey used to advertise digital
television channel. Perhaps he is a distant cousin cut from the same
genetic towelling, separated at birth and left to evolve on opposite
sides of the pond. Monkey takes his audience on outings to museums and
bookstores, to temples and concerts, and often to his own kitchen to
expand the readers' horizons, bake cakes and amuse us along the way.
Or even experience Monkey's adventures with cheese - if you dare. Although
kids will enjoy this site, adults will get more out of its subtle humour.
But the more you find out about Monkey and his life as a piece of tatty
old terry cloth, you get to realise that its creator, whoever it is,
really loves their toy monkey. Did you ever love your soft toys this
much? Shame on you.

The Holidays With Monkey section spotlights some of Monkey's favorite

My favorite section is Monkey's Costume Gallery (under Halloween). Monkey

to a jellyfish and the Dali Lama to a marshmallow. Quite clever for
a little monkey!
There is also the Cooking With Monkey section, featuring such yummy
recipes (with step-by-step photos) as Crunchy Rice Crispie Treats, Mama
Stamberg's Cranberry Relish, Sunshine Jello Salad (duly noted as not
actually using real sunshine,) brie on a baguette (not just for Bastille
Day anymore!) and guacamole and basic nachos. Mmmm, sounds tasty! And
all prepared by the host himself!

Since half my neighborhood knows better than to answer the door when I'm
standing on the other side waving a Ziploc bag full of something I made
too much of, I've now taken to poisoning everyone on the Internet, one by
one. Though I once labored to appear to be the type of person who'd sooner
choke on her own greased fist than consider spending $20 on Aztec cocoa,
I must now reveal that I am indeed the type of person has considered spending
$20 on Aztec cocoa, and that my heart paliptates when a link to a new fudge
recipe shows up in my inbox. I have no photo documentation of me scampering
off to the kitchen to boil up a pot of wholesome homemade candy, and then
boxing up a hunk of it and mailing it off to the fudge recipe link sender,
who appears to be made of terrycloth, only half expecting that a terrycloth
person would actually eat something that came from someone who's basically
a total fucking stranger. However, I now have evidence that said fudge was
graciously received and cleverly rehabilitated without the use of marshmallow
paste. Please to enjoy: MONKEYFUDGE!
